Moms in Prayer head into another school year

MADISON – As another school year approaches in the Madison City School District, the local chapters of Moms in Prayer International are also gearing up for their weekly prayer ministries.
The group, formerly known as Moms in Touch, is celebrating its 30-year anniversary of existence and also boasts 20 years of service in the Madison area. Lamarr Stevens is the area coordinator and oversees 36 prayer groups in Madison County.
“We pray mostly for peace and knowledge for parenting,” Stevens said.
Every school in Madison County can lay claim to a Moms in Prayer group, which Stevens said consists of two-to-10 members. There are also groups that pray over children who have joined college, the military and general workforce.
With four children herself, Stevens said the experience has helped her personally.
“I pray for my four children, and it gives me peace knowing that others are praying with me for what’s best for my kids – because it’s a fight against what the world expects from us,” she said.
A theme arises for each week’s meeting, Stevens explained, that will come directly from scripture. The meeting typically last around an hour and are held at members’ homes.
Stevens also stressed the groups are interdenominational, non-political and concentrate explicitly on prayer.
Leader training day for area groups is scheduled for August 13, with group members scheduled to begin ministries several weeks later.
“They usually get going after Labor Day,” Stevens said.
