Madison police officer-involved shooting at Planet Fitness leaves one dead

MADISON – The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting involving a Madison Police officer.

According to authorities, an officer-involved shooting occurred Sunday afternoon at Planet Fitness on Highway 72 in Madison.

According to Madison Police spokesperson Major John Stringer, at approximately 5 p.m. officers responded to a check subject call at Planet Fitness, 8050 Hwy 72.

“Officers arrived and made contact with a subject who fit the caller’s description,” Stringer said. “An altercation ensued. As a result, shots were fired. The subject was later pronounced dead at the scene.”

Five Madison Police officers involved were placed on administrative leave per department policy.

There are not a lot of details available right now and police say there will not be any more information released until the family of the deceased has been notified. Because it was a Madison officer-involved the sheriff’s department will take over the investigation.

No names are being release at this time. We will bring you updates as we have them.

Along with the Madison Police, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Fire Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Troopers and Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc (HEMSI) responded to the scene.

This marked the second shooting death in Madison over the past week. Last Sunday, Zeandre Marjuan Paul Zachary, 25, of Huntsville was shot behind the Kroger parking lot on Wall Triana. He later died from his injuries.

The suspect, Spencer Xzavier Holden, 21, was located Tuesday at a hospital in Chattanooga, TN and charged.
