Madison residents will get the chance to voice their opinion as to whether or not the city council should pursue efforts in legalizing alcohol sales on Sunday.
The city council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, during the regular city council meeting. Madison City Attorney Anne-Marie Lacy said the result could be the passage of a resolution in support of Sunday alcohol sales. City Councilman Larry Vannoy said he would like to get the results of what could be potentially lost or gained in sales tax revenue.
Following the public hearing, the council will then decide if they will proceed with legislation before the measure would go into effect.
The city of Huntsville recently approved Sunday alcohol sales. City officials there say Huntsville will gain an additional $300,000 a year in revenue as a result of passing the resolution.
Councilman Marc Jacobson and Council member Cynthia McCollum said Madison does not need to lose revenue to Huntsville and should proceed to make Sunday alcohol sales in Madison legal. The city will draft a local act to present at the public hearing. Lacy said it will be similar to the one Huntsville did.
