Beautification Board Vice President Debbie Overcash, City Council President Bill Holtzclaw, Columbia Elementary School Assistant Principal Nelson Brown and Mayor Paul Finley pose for a picture during the annual Beautification Board Awards luncheon July 29. Columbia Elementary was honored for the best use of the knockout rose, the city’s official flower.

The Madison Beautification and Tree Board recognized nearly 70 nominees July 29 as part of the annual beautification awards program at the Madison Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

This year, the Beautification and Tree Board received a record number of nominations. Of the nearly 90 nominees, 68 will be formally recognized at the awards luncheon, held in conjunction with the monthly chamber at the Madison Holiday Inn.

Using judges who do not reside within the city limits, nominated properties are scored based on six key elements: first impression, design, plants (health and suitability to site), maintenance, hardscape design and litter control.

In order for a property to be recognized and honored with a beautification award, they must have scored 95 or higher out of a possible 100.

Properties that score a perfect 100 are recognized with an additional Excellence Award and one property is honored with the Knock-out Award. The Knockout Award was added in 2008, after the City of Madison adopted the Knock-out Rose as the city’s signature plant. This award is given to the property with the best use of knockout roses in their landscape.

The nominees for this year’s Knockout Award were: Columbia School, Woody Anderson Ford, Madison Municipal Building, and both the Burger King on Madison Blvd. and the Burger King on Hughes Road.
