Pharmacy hosts golf tournament to benefit local charities

This past Monday, Huntsville’s Star Super Market and Discount Pharmacy hosted the inaugural Charity Classic to benefit the Kids to Love and Military Child Education Coalition.

Both charities serve the Madison and Huntsville communities.

The golf tournament, held at The Ledges country club in Huntsville, brought out 36 teams and 146 players and raised $20,000 in just one day.

“The turnout was absolutely phenomenal,” said Lonnie Miller, event coordinator. “We could not be more elated from the support we got from the community. It far exceeded our expectations.”

Kids to Love, is a non-profit foundation with the goal of meeting the needs of foster children while they wait for homes. The organization has helped more than 75,000 foster children since 2004.

The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is also a non-profit. Its mission, stated on the organization’s website, is to focus on enduring quality educational opportunities for all military children affected by mobility, family separation and transition.

“We needed to raise awareness for the needs of these charities,” said Kylie Smith, who helped plan the event. “And being able to do a fun day for everyone and raise money at the same time made it even better.”

All prizes awarded were Nike gift cards. Smith Infinity won a $400 gift card for first place team. Brian Richardson won a $300 gift card for coming in first place in the long drive championship. BBVA Compass Bank’s Ty Cucarola won the chipping contest and both Conway Ellers and Robin Newby won the putting contest.

Perhaps the biggest prize up for grabs was a car. Five dealerships offered a free car to anyone who made a hole in one, but nobody managed to make the hit.

Smith said plans are already in the making for next year’s event. They’ve already tapped the country club to host the event again.
