Traffic signal at Wall Triana/U.S. 72 intersection now operating following fatal accident
The traffic signal located at Wall Triana Hwy. and U.S. 72, which was damaged Wednesday, Sept. 29, is now operational.
The traffic detection loops are not operational at this time due to damage, therefore the signal is set at pre-timed intervals. Police are advising motorists to use extreme caution through this intersection until all repairs are made.
The accident, which happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, left one man dead, police said.
Zachary Keyser, a solider stationed at the Redstone Arsenal, was killed in the three-vehicle crash.
“Our soldiers at Redstone are part of our family,” Madison Police Capt. Jim Cooke said.
Madison Mayor Paul Finley also expressed his condolences.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family,” Finley said.
Huntsville native Jonathan Miller was also involved in accident, and he has been charged with driving under the influence.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Cooke said. “It will be several weeks before we know exactly what happened.”
A truck involved in the wreck hit a utility pole that houses the main controls for the traffic signals. Utility crews are on the scene and are reporting it could take 3-4 days to have the system completely restored.
Finley thanked the city employees for their tireless effort in restoring the signal to intersection, which he said is vital to the entire Tennessee Valley.
“We had people on the scene since the accident occurred. Those folks just didn’t sit here and whine,” Finley said. “They stepped up.”
