Madison to host student talent show

Madison’s got talent.

What is being called the biggest talent show Madison has ever had, a city-wide talent show is right around the corner. Auditions for performers are being held Wednesday, Oct. 13 for middle schoolers and Monday, Oct. 18 for high school students. Auditions are being held in the Discovery Middle School band room. The show will take place at the Madison City Schools Stadium Thursday, Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a fine, fine show,” said Johnny Nash, band director at Discovery Middle and one of the creators of the show. “We hope the whole community will come out and support it. It’s a group effort—a lot of faculty members within our school and Bob Jones’ honor society, student government and yearbook staff also helped out.”

High school and middle school performers will have their own division of categories, such as solo dancer, solo performer, general talent and more.

He said the show will last from two to three hours and be filled with “lots of entertainment” with special guest performers during intermission, including the local band Madison Jazz.

“It’s going to be a big, full-time show,” Nash said. “We have a stage with a backdrop and tent facing the home side of the stands. We have a lot talent in here and this is another opportunity to show off the artistry of the students in Madison.”

Nash said it is too early to know exactly how many categories and performers the show will feature because auditions haven’t been held yet, but he did say the winners of each category will receive $100 in cash. The grand prize winner’s amount has not yet been decided.

Nash said the money raised from the show will benefit Discovery.

“This is a way to raise money for the school, but still be a fun event for the community,” he said. “We have a lot of talented kids out there that love to perform. This gives them an opportunity to perform for a larger crowd. People in Madison love to see events like this.”

He also said they are looking for corporate sponsors for the show. For $250, Nash said sponsors would get a sign with their name displayed on stage.

Nash expects approximately 1,000 residents to attend the event, which starts at 5:30 p.m.. Tickets are $15 per person and can be picked up at Discovery, but won’t be available until Oct. 20.

“Hopefully, everyone will embrace it and it will become a regular community event that happens every year,” he said.
