Rocket City United selects mascot

Rocket City United President Andy Zorovich unveils the new RCU mascot — Rocky the eagle.

Madison, the eagle has landed.

Rocket City United announced their new mascot — Rocky the eagle — during a press conference Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Hogan Family YMCA.

Contest entries were sent out in October to nearly every high school and university in North Alabama, and a panel of five members selected three finalists from 15 submitted entries.

The three finalists were Rocky the eagle, a flying squirrel and a deer.

RCU President Andy Zorovich said more than 2,500 votes were cast online at RocketCityUnited.com and at various locations and businesses.

Justin Coggin, a University of North Alabama student, won the contest with his Rocky design, and Coggin received $250, an RCU jersey and a pair of 2011 season tickets for winning the contest.

UNA also received a $1,000 honorarium for Coggin’s design.

Applications to be the inaugural Rocky will be available on RCU’s website Dec. 15 or by e-mailing infoline@rocketcityunited.com.

Tryouts will be held Jan. 8 at a time and location to be determined.

“We look forward to having our mascot out in the community,” Zorovich said.

The 2011 season will begin in May.

The RCU schedule will be set in mid-January.
