Madison County High School Gymnasium renamed

The Madison County High School gymnasium is getting a new name.

At its Jan. 20 meeting, the Madison County Board of Education voted unanimously to name the gymnasium, “The Madison County High School Coach Jerry Craig Gymnasium,” after County Commissioner Jerry Craig.

Craig has been the District 3 commissioner since 1984.

“The Madison County Public Schools is very proud of Commissioner Craig’s accomplishments,” said Geraldine Tibbs, director of public relations and communications for Madison County Public School System.

The official dedication ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4. Following the ceremony, a reception in the cafeteria will be held in Craig’s honor.

Craig is a former teacher and coach of Madison County High School. During his more than 20 year tenure, Craig taught driver’s education, economics and physical education.

“My favorite part of teaching was interacting with the students and the feeling of helping someone,” Craig said.

Craig also coached track, baseball, golf and boys and girls basketball. He received “Coach of the Year” five times and coached seven teams in the state play-offs.
He credits his former players and their parents for his success.

“My job was to get them to the game, that’s about all I did,” he joked. “Without good players and parents none of that success would be possible.”

Craig said he was surprised by the board’s decision to rename the gymnasium.

“I’m honored and humbled,” he said.
