Madison students nominated to service academies

Sen. Richard Shelby applauded the students that he has nominated to the United States Service Academies, including U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“Furthering one’s education at one of our nation’s service academies is remarkable,” said Shelby.  “These students have shown exemplary performance in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities.  The selection process for the academies is extremely competitive, and I am pleased to be able to nominate a number of students from North Alabama.”

Service academy nominees must be residents of Alabama and must complete the required ACT and SAT exams.  Applicants are also required to provide letters of recommendation, their school transcript, a completed medical examination and the required application form.

The following Madison students have been nominated:

Catherine Baltar, daughter of James and Catherine Baltar of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Pope John Paul II High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Lauren Jarreau, daughter of Brett and Gloria Jarreau of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Bob Jones High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

David Stone, son of Jon David and Elizabeth Stone of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Bob Jones High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Kittiya Harris, daughter of Gerald and Sritorn Harris of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Bob Jones High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Alexandria Van Rassen, daughter of Michael and Cynthia Van Rassen of Madison, Alabama, and a student at Bob Jones High School, was nominated to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final admission decision.
