Reflections contest pursues diverse angle for 2011

Numerous students in Madison’s secondary schools created contributions for Reflections.

National, state and local PTAs sponsor Reflections, a creative arts competition. For year’s theme, “Diversity,” the six competition categories are literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, choreography and film/video production.

The top five entries advance to citywide review, with winners going to the state level.

“I was very impressed with our students’ creativity. They’re truly a ‘diverse’ group,” Cynthia Larsen said. She is Reflections chairperson for Bob Jones High School.

For music composition, finalists were Victoria Van, for both “I Am Who I Am” and “Passacaglia Chaconne” for piano, and James Eaton from Bob Jones.

Genesis Phillips from Discovery Middle School was chosen for choreography.

In film production, finalists were Joey Caldwell, Discovery, “Diversity Is”; Jessica Rigsby, “In Somnis”, and Joshua Koopmon, Bob Jones.

Visual arts winners from Bob Jones were Lauren Hadley, “D Is for Diversity”; Alli Sloan, “No Two Are Alike”; Lorin Franklin, “Standing Out BJHS”; and Bridget O’Hara, “Innocence and Wisdom”; and Alexis Holden, “Mindless Behavior,” Bob Jones.

Receiving honorable mentions from Bob Jones were Nicholas Monroe, Shana Smith, Chad Hastings, Na Kim, Kelby Cox, Tanisha Goodlow, Adrienne Dauma, Rachel Travers, Meredith O’Malley and Hannah Bailey, along with Discovery students Victoria Van, Samantha Butler, Crystal Canatria, Abigail Howard, Sydney Bergstresser and Sofia Lima.

For photography, Discovery’s top entries were Alexis Gurganious, “Love is Blind”; Tasha Lavish, “Snuggle Buddies”; Sarah Skillern, “The Nature of Diversity”; Evan Jenkins, “Shoes”; Rachel Murray, “Diversity;” and Darian Mitchell, “Why Can’t You See Me?”

Photography honorable mentions were Rachel Shocky, Elizabeth Brown, Jessi Wright and Heidi Schutzbach from Discovery.

Literature winners from Discovery were Merciles Wallace and Panteleimon Polychroniades; Anna Rosado, Liberty Middle School; and Sascha Kirkham and Alma Atassi, Bob Jones.

Literature honorable mentions were Emily Black, Rebeckah Anderson, Zachary Fitzgibbon and Shawn Mulligan, Bob Jones; Alexa Mecikalski, Alyssa Kennedy and Krupa Patel, Liberty; and Kayla Carden and Spencer Webb, Discovery.

Bob Jones’ Reflections finalists at will receive ribbons and certificates at the PTSA meeting in January.
