Library offers Military Child Education Coalition programming

Madison Public Library is hosting a workshop, one in a series associated with the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC), that will explore learning styles.

Active worldwide, the coalition a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. “In 2005, the U.S. Army contracted with MCEC to establish more than 25 parent-to-parent teams around the world,” Parent-to-Parent trainer Dana Trulock said.

“MCEC promotes partnerships between military installations and supporting school districts and has developed various programs and resources in support of this effort,” Trulock said.

Trulock, a military spouse for 20 years and mother of two teenagers, has completed MCEC training and has experience in the classroom.

Youth services librarian Maggie Allen said everyone has a personal learning style, which may combine ways for optimum understanding. “Knowing your child’s personal learning style will help capitalize on his/her strengths at school and at home,” Allen said.

The field of education has many theories about learning styles. “We’re going to discuss the most (common) theory of auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning and look at associated behaviors and attributes,” Trulock said.

“Our Parent-to-Parent program takes information directly to parents (as) workshops designed to address specific education issues that children face,” Trulock said. The goal of the program is to give parents researched-based information, proven techniques and resources to become their child’s best educational advocate.

For Madison Public Library, the MCEC sessions are an example of serving a diverse customer base. “Madison is filled with people from all over the country and all over the world,” Allen said. The workshop format works well for busy parents.

The workshop on Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. is free and open to all parents, regardless of military affiliation. Registration is not required.
