Flooding slows traffic across county

A car caught in a flood.

Heavy downpours overnight led to a lot of standing water and even some localized flooding on some area roadways. Plummer Road just east of Indian Creek in Madison County was impassable Wednesday morning.

Nick Fitchard Road south of Bob Wade Lane was also covered in water. Other roads that were affected were all across the city of Huntsville as Oakwood Avenue at Giles and Maysville Road is closed because of flooding and a water rescue took place when a motorist became stranded in the flood waters. McKinley Avenue at Maysville and Truman are were also impassable.

Fairmont Road has water over the roadway. Portions of Bankhead are flooding and are partially impassable. Oakwood Avenue eastbound from Cabaniss Road is open, but westbound lanes are still closed. Most areas are showing signs of improvement from the flooding, but some areas are still under water these include

  • Jordan Road & Homer Nance Road
  • Kimberly Lou Boulevard, off Homer Nance
  • Parts of Plummer Road
  • Parts of Old Railroad Bed Road
  • Nick Fitcheard Road
  • Nix Road

There is a river flood warning for Flint River at Brownsboro Road. Drivers are asked to use extreme caution. Do not go around barricades as they are in place for safety reasons.  Rain and storms are likely until this afternoon, and then we expect a clearing.  There is only a slight risk of severe weather today, mainly south of the Tennessee Valley.

Much colder air is expected tonight into Thursday as a strong cold front passes through the area as temps tomorrow could be some 30 degrees colder with highs in the upper 30s.
