Bob Jones athletes busy with spring sports

Bob Jones High School athletes involved with track, basketball, volleyball and wrestling, along with the band’s winter guard, have been busy at state competitions.

The indoor track team entered the state meet this month. “Our boys finished 10th and the girls in 11th place,” Principal Robby Parker said. “Both teams overcame some injuries to have a strong showing.”

These Bob Jones track students ranked in the state’s top 10:

* Nick Beavers — Second place, 60 hurdles; fifth place, triple jump

* Pete West — Third place, pole vault

* Rishad Goode — Eighth place, triple jump

* Moriah Lorge — Third place, pole vault

* Kayla Krueger — Eighth place, high jump; seventh place, triple jump

* Kirsten Failing — Eighth place, pole vault

* Kourtney Lacey — Fifth place, long jump

* Chris Myrick — Tenth place, 3200 meters

Bob Jones rated eighth place in the girls 4 x 800 meter relay with Vanessa Cardwell, Courtney Moffett, Sarah Buckelew and Moriah Lorge.

In the boys 4 x 800 meter relay, Kearva Beckwith, Seth Parker, David Hergenroder and Chris Myrick earned ninth place. For the boys 4 x 400 meter relay, Bob Jones placed ninth with Jarek Taylor, Trenton Lynch, Andrew Foote and Nick Beavers.

Nick Beavers, Jarek Taylor, Trenton Lynch and Jonathan Caudle earned fifth place in the boys 4 x 200 meter relay.

The Bob Jones girls basketball team is pursuing its fourth state championship in five years, Robby Parker said.

“The Winter Guard traveled to Prattville for a guard competition. We competed against schools from Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi and came in first place,” Parker said. Guard member Megan Benefield won the rifle spin-off competition.

Bob Jones athletes named to the All-State volleyball team are Drea Matthews and Megan Butler. In the second team, Lauren Butler, Alexis Howell and Haley earned slots and Jazmyn Wright received honorable mention.

“The Bob Jones wrestling team finished eighth in the state,” Parker said. “We had 11 athletes qualify for the state meet.”
