Madison elementary revs it up on Field Day

Before summer vacation, Madison Elementary School students celebrated the end of the 2011-2012 school year with Field Day, a spring tradition.

“Field Day was a two-day event,” PTA president Melanie Davis said. Kindergartners and first-graders took the field on the morning of May 10. Second- and third-graders had their turn that afternoon. Students in grades 4-5 enjoyed their time on May 11.

“Physical education teachers Patti Faust and Anne Clift organized games and ‘play stations,’ including a 50-yard dash, scooter basketball, tug-o-war, face and nail painting, ‘tattoos’ and four-square,” Davis said. They also played box hockey, belly bumpers and staged a water relay.

“Patty and Anne did a wonderful job organizing activities for the kids to participate in,” Davis said. Volunteers manned all activities.

At the PTA concession stand, volunteers sold $2,100 of giant dill pickles, Gatorade and snow cones. Proceeds will buy physical education equipment.

“Golden Rule Bar-B-Q of Madison was a great supporter of our event. They provided all the ice and Styrofoam cups for both days,” Davis said.

Terri Michal, owner of Zoot Suit Riot, cranked up the volume as disc jockey and played music continuously throughout the event. “The students enjoyed dancing and singing to some of their favorite songs,” Davis said.

Rainy weather delayed Field Day, which caused a scheduling conflict for Big Bounce Rentals. However, the rental company “gave us an 18-foot slide and obstacle course for PE” during the originally scheduled days. “They didn’t charge us anything.”

Earlier in the month, sixth-graders attended the “Sixth-Grade Sports Spectacular” for Madison City Schools. “Madison elementary won the Sportsmanship Award for the third year in a row,” Davis said.

“This two-day event wouldn’t have been possible without our wonderful volunteers. We had parents, grandparents and friends of Madison elementary who came out to support us,” Davis said.

Many parents, students and even staff members commented that Field 2012 was one of the best in memory, Davis said.
