Workshop to prepare college-bound students

The “College Bound … Things to Know Before You Go” workshop will prepare teenagers for their new life on campus.

Open to the public, the two-session workshop will be conducted June 19 and 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Asbury Five Points youth building, corner of Hughes and Gillespie roads.

Facilitator and class organizer Vann Jones said 21 students have registered so far. “We can accommodate about 30. We’ll have another push with a Facebook and email blast this week,” he said. Jones works as contracts transition manager for NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center.

At a previous workshop, the students were enrolled at eight different colleges and universities in four states.

While the workshop started with young women in mind, the sessions are open to anyone. “Parents told me their sons don’t know how to jump a battery either,” Jones said.

In the “Emergency Road Safety” session, State Sen. Bill Holtzclaw will explain how to jump start a battery, check tire pressure, change a flat tire and take precautions for a breakdown on an interstate highway.

To protect personal property, students will hear tips about staying safe on campus and securing their laptops, iPads, Smartphones and other devices, Jones said.

Tami Grant with USANA Health Services will present “Avoiding the Freshman Fifteen” in a health and nutrition segment. Grant will emphasize the importance of good eating habits, exercise and proper sleep.

Kent Thompson, branch manager with Redstone Federal Credit Union, will discuss “Basics to Money Management” with cautions about personal debt and ways to use credit wisely.

Jones will examine individual learning styles for success in college, avoiding drug or alcohol abuse and capitalizing on positive experiences on campus.

Sgt. Drew Westrope with the Madison Police Department will instruct a rape prevention and unarmed self-defense session for women only. Students will kick pads and learn techniques to escape dangerous situations.

A panel of current college students will conduct a question-and-answer session with participants.

Registration fee is $10 and includes handouts and a snack supper each night. To register, visit asburyumcmadison.com.
