Igo is Mill Creek’s Teacher of the Year

Leah Igo, a native Madisonian, was chosen as Teacher of the Year at Mill Creek Elementary School.

Leah Igo is Teacher of the Year at Mill Creek.

Igo was born and grew up in Madison. She attended West Madison and Madison elementary schools, Liberty Middle School and Bob Jones High School.

“Many students have touched my heart in a special way over the past years,” Igo said. “I’ve been blessed with so many wonderful students that have made my years of teaching so enjoyable. Each year, the group of students I spend the year with leaves me with precious memories and experiences.”

Igo believes she “was called to be a teacher. I know there isn’t another job that I would find as fulfilling as this one.”

Seeing children grow and succeed is rewarding to her. “Building relationships with them, earning their trust and becoming a person they love means so much to me,” she said.

At the University of Alabama, she majored in elementary education and earned a bachelor’s degree. She pursued instructional leadership to receive a master’s degree at Alabama A&M University.

From 2007-2009, she taught second graders at Heritage Elementary School and served on the text book adoption committee. Since 2009, Igo has taught second grade at Mill Creek. She has been active with the literacy and improvement teams and the wellness committee. She also sponsored the Track Club. She will return to Mill Creek for the 2012-2013 school year.

She is involved with the “Teachers Are Developing as Historians” grant. Igo completed multiple training sessions for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). Since 2009, she has served as an AMSTI science trainer and has assisted second-grade teachers with effectively using the initiative’s science modules.

Igo achieved certification for the Renaissance Model and Master Reading Classroom. She was named Huntsville Hospital Health Teacher of the Year in 2009. She holds membership in several professional honor societies.

Her husband Craig works as an electrical engineer.
