James Clemens puts up a strong fight against winning Sparkman

BY JIM SANDOVAL / FOR THE RECORD

The Sparkman Senators rolled to a 37-26 area win over the James Clemens Jets.

Sparkman’s victory was led by Hunter Simpson’s two interceptions and quarterback Danny Johnson’s vertical passing.

DeVon Johnson’s long return of the opening kickoff set up a 37 scoring run by Lorenzo James to put the Senators on the board 6-0 with only a minute and five seconds off the clock.

At the end of the first quarter Blake Chapman busted a 73 yard run to put the Senators up 12-0.

Miller Matzek drilled a 37 field goal to raise the lead to 15-0.  Simpson then intercepted an errant pass and raced over 40 yards for a score and a 22-0 lead. James Clemens’ Heath Burchfield hit Deondre Douglas with a 63 yard scoring strike to start a James Clemens comeback and a 22-7 score.

On the ensuing drive, Danny Johnson hit Chapman with a 40-yard pass before Sparkman turned the ball over on downs. James Clemens went on a drive with a 29 yard touchdown pass being called back on a penalty before stalling on the 1 yard line as time ran out in the first half.

One the first series of the third quarter Simpson’s second interception set up a Senator drive culminated by a James 10 yard scoring run and a 2 point PAT giving Sparkman a 30-7 lead. A Danny to DeVon Johnson touchdown pass gave the Senators a 37-7 lead.

James Clemens refused to fold, and following a 48-yard kickoff return by Phillip Noble, extended their drive with a fake punt and pass for 30 yards with a penalty tacked on leading to a 10 yard scoring pass from Burchfield to Jayce Hampton, narrowing the score to 37-13.

The Jet’s Josh McCrimon recovered a fumble in the end zone to bring the score to 37-20 and a 20-yard pass from Burchfield to Josh Garth ended the scoring at 37-26.

Josh Mitchell had an interception for Clemens.

James Clemens Jets 0-3 (0-2 area) hosts Buckhorn next Friday while Sparkman 1-2 (1-1) travels to Austin.
