‘Godspell’ springs to life at Bob Jones

MADISON — Bob Jones Musical Theatre will present “Godspell” on April 11-13 in Zompa Auditorium.

Artistic Director Mary Davis describes the Bob Jones version as “relevant and modern. We’re bringing the Gospel of Matthew to the community in a way that will capture audiences of today, with a story that captures the heart of people throughout time.”

Richard Brasseale is portraying Jesus. Jesse Tollison’s roles are John the Baptist and Judas.

Cast members are Isis Butler, Savannah Graner, Christopher Gunner, Kinzie Kerce, Emily McDowell, James Mercier, Brenton Nash, Elena Ontiveros, Ryan Rogers, Olivia Skillern, Samantha Soliz, Ryan Rogers and Allie Wieczorek.

Students Stephanie Lepper, Kaitlin Duez, Jake McClellan, Exavier Ayers and Rachel Quillen are assisting technical director B. Dwayne Craft. Randall Field is music director for the pit rhythm combo and has served as the cast’s vocal coach.

“As with any Bob Jones performance (theatre, choir, band or art), the directors, cast and crew are excited to see our hard work come to life on stage,” Davis said.

As director, Davis’ main challenge is having all actors on stage throughout the show. “It’s all about the ‘ensemble,'” she said. Davis also has “reinvented ways to tell the parables, still using the written lines … yet being creative.”

Students Tori Weldon and Hannah Diamant “have been instrumental in ideas, blocking and polishing of the show. Olivia Skillern has been fantastic with movement, dancing and stage pictures,” Davis said. Jake McClellan has designed lighting for $4,000 of rented equipment.

Madison resident Al Gilbert has programmed the cast’s mics. Student producers Fleur Jones and Devyn Guilleabeaux have created imaginative promotions and programs.

Show times are April 11, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. and a 2 p.m. matinee on April 13. Tickets, all general admission, are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens (60 years and older).

“I’m so hopeful Madison will come to see this show,” Davis said.

For tickets, visit showtix4u.com, Bob Jones media center or the box office one hour before showtime.
