UAH plans two weeks for Charger Soccer Academy

HUNTSVILLE – Soccer enthusiasts can hone their game at the Charger Soccer Academy at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

Campers can enroll in full and half-day programs at the UAH Soccer Complex. Camp dates are June 17-20 and July 8-11.

The camps are affiliated with Elite Soccer Academy, an advanced soccer school that trains beginner to advanced players. Campers will compete individually and as teams (elitesocceracademy.com).

Charger Soccer Academy uses various instruction techniques to challenge youth in creative sessions. The camp can help beginning, intermediate, advanced and high school skill levels. Instructors will group players by age and playing ability.

The junior camp is geared for five- to seven-year-olds and will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children will learn basic soccer moves, along with enjoying fun-filled activities and games.

Campers from eight to 13 years old in the advanced camp will meet from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Coaches will instruct the campers for individual skills, tactics and fundamentals for team play. Tournaments for 3v3 and 6v6 will be held each day.

The goalkeepers’ camp for eight- to 13-year-olds will give intense training on techniques, diving, handling and distribution. Instruction will focus on tactical aspects and positional play.

All camps are open to boys and girls. Fees are $140 for full day and $100 for half-day. For six or more players, a team discount of $15 will apply.

The Elite Soccer Academy has assembled a well-rounded staff that will offer quality instruction and plenty of enthusiasm. Camp director Jimmy Mitchell works as women’s head coach at UAH. This fall, Matt Watts will begin his first year as head men’s soccer coach at UAH and previously worked as head coach at Delta State University. Garrett Linquist works with Coach Mitchell at assistant coach for UAH girls’ soccer.

Other college, club and high school coaches also will be on staff.
