Sue Christiansen; June 2, 2013

Sue Christiansen, 89 of Huntsville passed away on June 2nd of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Born December 14, 1923 in Danville, Illinois, she was the daughter of a Disciples of Christ minister from Charleston, South Carolina. While serving a church in Sidell, Illinois her father, Augustus deGafferelly met his wife-to-be, Leslie Green. The young family moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where Sue started first grade.

In 1964 the family moved to Huntsville with their 3 children, Deb, Dick and Tim. Sue continued her teaching career at Monte Sano Elementary. She also taught at Rison Elementary and Joe Bradley with the 3-C’s and the Educational Improvement Programs. In 1973 Sue started The Early Childhood Ministry at First Christian Church under senior minister Dr. John Jackson. In addition, she taught Sunday school for many years and was a leader in the church’s Christian Women’s Fellowship.

Sue Christiansen is survived by her husband Chris, daughter Debbie Thompson, sons Dick and Tim, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Sunday, June 9, at First Christian Church, immediately followed by the funeral service. Sue has been laid to rest in Valhalla Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to First Christian Church’s Early Childhood Ministry.
