MADISON — Doris Crane is one thrilled Madison resident.

Crane received a letter last week notifying her that her yard would win a beautification award.

“I am out every single day and spend about two hours just on the yard,” she said. “Trimming, planting flowers and fertilizing are the main things I do. So I spend a lot of time out there.”

Crane said after she retired from teaching in the Huntsville City Schools system, she took her hobby of gardening and turned it into her passion.

“I have always enjoyed gardening and have done it for many, many years now,” she said. “Some of my favorite things to plant in the garden are flowers, especially roses.”

Constant care of the roses are a must and Crane said she spends extra time each day on her roses.

“Early spring are the best for roses,” she said. “Early summer is the best season for petunias and daisies. So I have seasonal flowers blooming in each season.”

Crane said she hopes to continue gardening for as long as she can get to her garden unassisted.

“I have 2.5 acres that I have to keep up with,” she said. “So it is a lot of yard but I will continue to do that as long as I can do it without help and in the future if I need help, I’ll ask for it.”
