MADISON – At its Sept. 10 meeting, the Madison Board of Education extended the superintendent’s contract to June 2016.

Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler’s contract was set to end June 2014, but the board extended Fowler’s contract to June 2016. The superintendent’s base annual salary as of Sept. 1, 2013 is $170,500.

With a two- percent annual increase, Fowler’s salary will increase to $173,910 on July 1, 2014 and to $177,400 on July 1, 2015.

Board member Ranae Bartlett said the contract extension “will be reassuring to parents and show other school systems that we can hang on to our superintendent, at least for a few more years.”

“I have the best job in the state of Alabama,” Fowler said.

Central Office instruction staff presented district statistics with the Alabama Reading and Math Test (AMRT+). “Because the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards are application-based, we will see the gaps close between elementary and high school (percentages in math and English),” board member Connie Spears said.

“Math continues to be a challenge for our entire state,” Bartlett said. Assistant principals and principals are receiving professional development for this need.

The board approved bids for termite control with The Bug Doctor, $23,488; lawn maintenance, Kickin Grass Lawn Service, $48,650; tree and shrub maintenance, Alabama Lawn Masters, $58,020; eight 84-passenger Type D and two 60-passenger Type D buses, Transportation South, $997,231.92; and one used mini bus, Transportation South, $22,000.

The board agreed on a land swap with Titono Ferias with Tri-Max Properties at the district’s transportation center on Westchester Drive in Arlington Park. Board attorney Woody Sanderson said the exchange would give the district a parcel with improved drainage and without a ditch.

Huntsville Hospital and The Orthopedic Center (TOC) will provide sports medicine coverage for all home football games, along with certified athletic trainers The hospital and TOC will receive free full-page advertisements in all athletic programs and field/game signage.

The board will have a curriculum retreat on Sept. 12 at 7 a.m. in the Central Office’s teacher resource room.
