Grissom High School hosted the competition at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center on Nov. 16. More than 700 students participated in grades 4-8. Children in grades 1-3 were allowed to compete in the fourth-grade division.

Math Mania pitted the students in individual and group tests. “The individual test determines the individual awards (for) the top 15 in each grade level,” Goldston said.

In the seventh-grade division, 142 individuals represented 22 schools. The students were divided into 40 groups for Math Mania, Julie Goldston said. Goldston serves as math team coach at Discovery Middle School.

In individual competition, Aditi Limaye of Discovery earned the first-place award. Eric Lee of Liberty Middle School followed in second place. Other place winners, who are all Discovery students, were Corey Tolbert, fourth; David Li, sixth; Tony Tian, tenth; and Joshua Byers, fifteenth.

Taking another first place, Discovery’s seventh-grade team won top honors with David Li, Aditi Limaye, Tony Tian and Corey Tolbert.

Math Mania had 132 eighth-graders from 20 schools, who were divided into 39 groups.

In individual testing among eighth-graders, Sharath Narayan of Liberty took second place. From Discovery, Alan Grissom and Shantanu Kadam earned fourth and fifth places, respectively. Needhi Badhe of Liberty rated in eleventh and Warren He in thirteenth place.

In group competition, Discovery had two teams in the top five. Alan Grissom, Warren He, Shantanu Kadam and Sean Lee reached second place. Meenu Bhooshanan, Kim Dang, Misa Ito and Marshall Wu came in at fourth place.
