Technology, reading and camaraderie top Heritage’s list for 2014
MADISON – Dr. Georgina Nelson, principal at Heritage Elementary School, takes pride in accomplishments during 2013 and anticipates improvements for 2014.
“When students arrive back to school, they will find a new computer lab in the K-2 wing of our building,” Nelson said. A federal grant and generous donations of individuals and Heritage PTA funded the lab.
“With over 800 students, we were in desperate need of an additional lab,” Nelson said. “I feel so blessed to have it ready to be used by students next week.”
So far this year, Heritage students have worked “extremely hard reading lots of books,” she said. Huntsville Havoc is giving a free game ticket to students who meet their reading goal.
Also this semester, students will participate in the “Read Across America” and “Reading the Most Coast to Coast” literacy events.
“Students in upper grades are very excited about our upcoming science fair. Our faculty members have worked tirelessly to prepare students to conduct quality science projects for this competition,” Nelson said. She anticipates winners at district and state meets again in 2014.
This spring, Heritage will sponsor the six-grade field day for all Madison elementary schools. “Our physical education department and PTA are working fast and furious to make this the best six-grade field day ever,” Nelson said.
In addition, Heritage students are looking forward to the field day for grades K-5.
The spring carnival will return to Heritage this spring. “This is a great time of fun for all family members,” Nelson said. Activities will include games, prizes and a silent auction with funds to benefit Heritage PTA.
However, the carnival’s main goal “is to provide family fun to our Heritage families,” Nelson said.
