MADISON COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind chill warning from midnight on Jan. 5 through noon on Jan. 7.

In addition, NWS has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. on Jan. 5 through 6 a.m. on Jan. 6.

Bitterly cold air will arrive in northwest and north central Alabama overnight on Jan. 5 and into early morning and persist through Jan. 7.

Wind-chill values will range from 0 degrees to -12 degrees in morning hours on Jan. 6-7. Below-zero wind chills will remain all day on Jan. 6. Higher elevations will experience the coldest temperatures.

Rapid arrival of this cold air may cause moisture on area roadways to freeze and cause slick travel conditions, according to NWS. Snowfall accumulations are forecast at less than .5 inch in most locations, with 1 inch possible in higher terrain.

With expectation of treacherous weather, most area school systems are delaying opening times:

* Madison County Schools — Two-hour delay on Jan. 6-7. Buses will run two hours later than normal.

* Huntsville City Schools — Opening at 10 a.m. on Jan. 6. Buses will run two hours later than normal. However, schools will open at the regular time for students, and breakfast will be available. All personnel are expected to report to work at the regular time.

* Madison Academy will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 6-7. Students should bring their lunch.

* Alabama A&M University will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 6.

* Madison City Schools will open at the regular time with no delays.

For up-to-date weather conditions, visit the NWS site at weather.gov and click North Alabama on the map.
