MADISON — In response to threatening wind chills on Tuesday morning, Madison City Schools will open two hours later on Jan. 28.

“The wind chill is forecasted to be below zero,” superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said. “This extra time will allow us to inspect our operating systems and buses. Hopefully, the two-hour delay will also allow some radiant heating.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind chill advisory, in effect from 9 p.m. on Jan. 27 through 9 a.m. on Jan. 29. Cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills.

Widespread wind chill values between zero and 8 degrees below zero can be expected, according to the NWS. Locations in the higher terrain of North Alabama and southern middle Tennessee may see values fall closer to ten degrees below zero on the nights of Jan. 27 and 28.

The NWS advises individuals to take precautions for the low temperatures to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Residents should protect water pipes and outdoor pets. To fight the brutal temperatures, dress in several layers and wear a hat and gloves.

“We will re-evaluate the situation (on Jan. 28) before making any decisions about any Wednesday delays,” Fowler said.

Fowler urges parents to dress their children in warm clothing.
