MADISON – The math team at Discovery Middle School rated first places in pre-algebra, algebra I and individual awards at the Hoover High School Math Tournament on March 1.

“This exceptional group of students ended on a high note,” Discovery coach and math teacher Julie Goldston said. The Hoover tourney is the last off-campus competition that the Discovery math aces will face this year.

“Teams could earn a maximum of 500 points, combining their four highest individual scores with the team’s ciphering score,” Goldston said. Hoover awarded medals to the top 15 individuals and trophy cups to the top five teams.

Discovery’s pre-algebra team won first place by 51 points. “There were 153 students from 24 schools participating in the large-school division for pre-algebra,” Goldston said.

Corey Tolbert earned first-place honors in the individual awards. “Corey had a perfect score and answered all three tiebreakers correctly,” Goldston said.

Closely following up, David Li earned second place, “David also made 100, but he missed one of the tiebreaker questions,” Goldston said.

Joshua Byers earned eighth place. Justin Byers compiled the Discovery team’s fourth highest score, earning 16th place, she said.

Discovery’s algebra 1 team won first place by an impressive 100 points. The Hoover tourney saw 171 students from 23 schools participating in the large-school division for algebra I.

In algebra competition, Discovery students brought home to top three awards. Aditi Limaye captured first place, while Shantanu Kadam was in second place and Tony Tian took third place.

Other Discovery winners in algebra I were Sean Lee in seventh place; Warren He, tenth; and Marshall Wu, eleventh place.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to be associated with this team,” Goldston said.
