MADISON — Bob Jones High School fashion students were among 1,200-plus delegates at the 2014 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference.

Students and teachers gathered at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre and Auburn University Montgomery to participate in more than 32 different competitive events and leadership development workshops on March 13-14.

The 2014 conference theme was “Discover Your FCCLA Voice.”

Competing at the FCCLA conference, Bob Jones student Tenaja Moultrie entered the category for fashion design. Alley Hunter participated in recycle and re-design activities. Katie Hubbard competed in “Teach and Train,” while Victoria Moorehead entered “Fashion Construction.”

Moultrie, Hunter, Hubbard and Moorehead are students in Kristy Wheeler’s fashion design class at Bob Jones. Wheeler teaches in the family and consumer sciences department and sponsors FCCLA.

FCCLA is a national, non-profit organization devoted to preparing family and consumer sciences students for leadership and future career opportunities. Alabama has more than 8,500 members who enjoy the organization’s benefits.

The Madison teenagers heard the keynote message from John Croyle, founder of the Big Oak Ranch. He explained his mission to establish a safe home for children in need.

“Involvement in FCCLA offers students a real opportunity to expand their leadership development and the important college- and career-ready skills necessary for success, such as career planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication,” FCCLA state advisor Jennifer Adams told the group.

Adams also discussed the events for Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR). More than 400 students competed in STAR contests at Auburn University on March 14.

Since its founding in 1945, the national FCCLA organization has had more than 10 million student members. For more information, visit FCCLA.com.
