MADISON – Breaded chicken patty, country potatoes, green peas, a slice of white bread and banana pudding were on the menu for Madison Mayor Troy Trulock today.

Trulock took time from his demanding schedule at City Hall to serve lunch at Madison Senior Center. On April 1, he volunteered in support for the second annual Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service (and it’s no April’s Fool’s joke).

American mayors showed appreciation to residents and individuals who make an impact on their communities. Many mayors held public events and capitalized the power of traditional and social media to spotlight national service, particularly AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.

In 2013, 832 Mayors representing nearly 100 million citizens participated in the inaugural Mayors Day of Recognition. Primary promoters for the commemoration are the Corporation for National and Community Service; Cities of Service; National League of Cities; and Mayor Scott Smith of Mesa, Ariz. and president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Madison Senior Center Director Vickie Parker said the center members were honored to have Trulock visit and appreciated his help in the kitchen.

Several senior citizens took turns with their cameras taking snapshots of their mayor. One woman asked, “Are you really the mayor?”

The center serves a hot lunch daily to its members and operates a homebound meal program.
