MADISON – Proving talent beyond their age, students in visual arts, music, drumline, winter guard, poetry and fashion will show their work at the Madison City Schools Spring Fine Arts Gala.

Exhibits and concerts will open at 4 p.m. on May 1 in the south wing and Zompa Auditorium at Bob Jones High School.

The gala “celebrates the fine arts programs and students in Madison City Schools and will showcase student work important on many levels,” art teacher Robin Lakso said. “Students love to share the work they have created with family and friends.”

In addition, the event offers “a wonderful venue to showcase the programs we have to offer students. (Visitors) can see for themselves that all students can and do create art,” Lakso said.

Art from elementary schools, Discovery Middle School and Bob Jones will be on exhibit from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Elementary choirs will sing in the small gym from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Bob Jones Drumline and Winter Guard will perform their award-winning “Shadows” in the large gym at 6 p.m.

Chosen by audition, the Madison City Honor Choir will be on the auditorium stage at 6:15 p.m. with “Blue Skies,” “The Pink Panther” and “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin’.” Bob Jones PTSA will meet at 7 p.m.

After poetry readings at 7:10, the Bob Jones concert band and wind ensemble will be in concert at 7:30 p.m.

Troy Koler, Senior Scholastic Gold Portfolio winner with Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards, said his artwork is “technical, done in triptych form in pen and ink.” Olivia Skillern, another senior portfolio winner, will show self-portraits in acrylic.

“Olivia struggled with paint in the beginning but persevered until she finally won her battle,” Lakso said. “She says her paintings are a true extension of herself.”

Kristy Wheeler’s fashion students will share their designs that won accolades at state competition. Fashion students will model clothing.

Math and art students collaborated to design Can-Struction projects. After the exhibit, they will donate the canned foods to Inside-Out Ministries.
