MADISON – Three suspects, including a teenager, have been arrested for a shooting in a Madison apartment complex likely triggered by a dispute over drugs, police said.
According to law enforcement accounts, the incident happened in the 3000 block of Flag Circle at the Carrington Cove apartments. “It was some guys shooting,” said Madison police investigator Terrell Cook, “they had fired several shots.”
At the scene, police report speaking with several witnesses. “It was some folks shooting at some other folks and missed. They were basically angry. Some stray rounds did go into a couple of apartment buildings and into a car,” Cook continued. “Thank goodness nobody was hit.”
Madison’s street crimes unit assisted in the investigation and detectives developed evidence which led to a search warrant at another home which, in turn yielded the discovery of a semiautomatic pistol believed to have been used in the shooting, Cook said.
Police arrested James Dangerfield, 22, and Dedrick Hackler, 24, both of Madison. The two were charged with of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm into a vehicle, as well as possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Investigators report finding marijuana during their search. “This incident was largely motivated over drugs,” said Cook. “Drugs were the catalyst of this incident. No charges have been filed against the targets of the shooting but additional charges are possible.”
Dangerfield and Hackler were booked into the Madison County Jail on $15,300 bond.
Also arrested was a juvenile whose identity is not being made public, described as a 16 year old boy. He was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm into a vehicle. He too was booked into the Madison County Jail and police are seeking to have him charged as an adult, Cook said.
Such incidents represented a growing challenge for police in Madison, said Cook adding that “violent crime, unfortunately, in America today is on the increase. So that’s just something we’re going to have to deal with and be prepared for.”
