MADISON – La Leigh Da Gallery owners are pursuing a long-time dream with their ‘re-purposed’ furniture, decorating accents and upholstery service.

Kellye Cuzzort and Linda Rasmussen had refinished furniture in their Kelly Plantation neighborhood before Leigh Brock moved there. In 2013, the trio opened their shop in Monrovia. Then while visiting Animal Trax, Brock found a vacancy at 105 Church St., Suite C in downtown Madison.

We needed more showroom, work space and increased foot traffic,” Rasmussen said. “We love the progress Madison is making as a ‘village’ or ‘destination’ for shopping, dining and the arts.”

Together, they have 25 years in refinishing, staining and interior decor. “‘Re-imagined furniture’ is our coined phrase. We see pieces that need some TLC” or need re-inventing with a new purpose or color, Rasmussen said.

They have transformed old stereo cabinets into bars, an old chiffarobe into a shoe closet, end tables into pet beds and headboards and footboards into benches. They seek ‘oops’ paint samples and then mix for unique chalk paint. “We clean, sand, prime, stain, paint in coats,” she said.

Along with furniture, the shop has napkins, flasks and humorous, black-and-white photo cards from Shannon Martin Girl Designs of Seattle. Wolf Creek Candle Company produces soy-based candles in scents like ‘Fresh Laundry’ and ‘Da Lime in Da Coconut.’

Andrea by Sadek porcelain flowers are hand-painted, lifelike replicas. La Leigh Da has decorative plates, new and vintage lamps, knobs, towels with vintage pictures and funny quotes and antique decanters and collectibles.

“We’ll re-upholster anything,” she said. They carry MASCO and Pindler & Pindler fabrics or customers can supply their own. Depending on the piece and work, labor normally ranges $35-$45 per yard.

La Leigh Da also custom paints and refinishes furniture. Consignors of furniture, art, pottery and handcrafted goods are welcome.

Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except closing at 6:30 on Thursdays for Madison Gazebo Concerts.
