Registration open for Summer Knights Scholastic Chess Tournament

MADISON – Registration is open now for the first annual Summer Knights Scholastic Chess Tournament.

Rainbow Elementary School will host the tournament on July 19.

“Playing in a summer chess tournament is a great way for your child to keep up chess playing skills,” parent volunteer Ranae Bartlett said.

“What is unique about the Summer Knights tournament is that it offers categories for both experienced rated players and non-rated players. If your child has never played in a chess tournament, this would be the one to try first,” Bartlett said

The rated category is open to students in grades K-12 who are members of the United States Chess Federation and previously have played in a rated tournament.

“The non-rated category is for students in grades K-12 who would like to try their first or second chess tournament for non-rated players,” Bartlett said.

Contestants can pre-register now to save on entry fees. Registration forms are available at res.madisoncity.k12.al.us. Click “Clubs and Organizations” and then click “Chess Club.”

Registration forms and payment should be mailed to Rainbow Elementary School, 50 Nance Road, Madison, AL 35758. Make checks payable to “Rainbow Elementary” and include players’ names on the check.

Deadline for paying advanced registration fees is July 14. Fee is $20 for rated players and $10 for non-rated. Players can register on-site on July 19 at 8:15 a.m. but the fees will double.

A mandatory player’s meeting will be held July 19 at 9 a.m. The first round starts at 9:15 a.m. Seating is limited, so parents can bring lawn chairs.

The tournament lasts for five rounds for each player, unless the player requests a bye. Round times will be 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m.
