MADISON – Asbury UMC is holding a seminar for those who might be experiencing a “Blue Christmas” this holiday season.

On Nov. 20 from 6 – 8 p.m., the church at 980 Hughes Road will host a free support group session – “Blue Christmas: Surviving the Holidays” – in Room 209 at the campus’ Hope building.

“What we wanted to do is to give people who are grieving an opportunity to come and find some tools to survive the holidays,” said Lay Leader Harriet Hess.

The event precedes Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hess described the group as a “sounding board” for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

“It’s amazing to see,” Hess said of the effects the seminar has on individuals. “I would see wonderful people coming in that can’t speak and are tearing up. By the end they are seeing joy in their lives.”

Hess stressed that the group is open to anyone, regardless of membership with Asbury or religious affiliation. Warm coffee will also be there to comfort those who attend.
