MADISON- Bob Jones honored five seniors before Monday night’s game against Grissom. Unfortunately after that it was all downhill as Grissom pulled away in the second half and romped to an 82-47 win.
It is the largest margin of defeat for Bob Jones this season who previously lost to Madison Academy by 32 points.
Bob Jones will try to break the current 4 game losing streak on Thursday at 7:30 against Sparkman in the Area 8 tournament at James Clemens. A loss means the season is over.
Bob Jones had an early lead but Grissom took the lead for good late in the first quarter. By halftime it was 43-27.
Bob Jones closed to 10 at 48-38 on a Deondre Douglas fast break basket but Grissom’s big man, senior 6-foot-10 Luke Luna proved too much to handle for Bob Jones. Luna scored six points in a row in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 54-38 and a three by Jordan Rodriguez put Grissom up 63-41.
Luna left with five minutes in the game finishing with 22 points. Grissom got scoring from eleven different players on their team. JJ Kaplan hit two threes in the fourth quarter and at the 4 minute mark officials started a continuous clock.
Deondre Douglas finished with 14 and Dalton Barkley with 13.
Bob Jones Coach Graham Aderholt said his team has been working on Sparkman, looking ahead to the area tournament.
One problem is Bob Jones opponents are shooting a high percentage behind the arc. Grissom shot 52% (11 for 21). Their field goal percentage was even higher, 57% (33- for 58). Bob Jones was outrebounded 39-25.
“The little things are catching up to us. We are missing too many easy layups and our free throw percentage is declining,” Aderholt said.
The health of the team is also been a problem. JD Sims missed Monday nights game with an illness. Dalton Barkley is just now getting back to full speed after suffering from pneumonia.
“We haven’t had our whole team together in two weeks. We’re still a good team, we just need to get on a roll,” Aderholt said. “Its a one game season now.”
“As coaches we are going to have them prepared and they are going to play hard.”
Bob Jones ended the season 14-15 after losing six of the last seven games.
