MADISON – Two days before football takes over the country for National Signing Day, two James Clemens softball players signed scholarships of their own in a morning ceremony Feb. 2 at the school.

Abbey Payne made it official with Snead State Community College, located in Boaz, while Renee Bolduc signed with Gadsden State Community College.

“I just want to thank all the coaches who have helped me – my parents, friends and family,” Bolduc said.

Payne’s decision weighed heavily on her two older siblings, both of whom had played for Coach Tracy Grindrod at Calhoun Community College and Wallace State Community College.

“I’ve know him throughout the years and I know what kind of coach he is, so that kind of helped my decision, too,” Payne said.

Payne mentioned she “strictly” plays outfield, so she’ll stick to that area at Snead State.

Introductions to the official signings were given by athletic director Eric Terrell, James Clemens softball coach A.J Daugherty, principal Brian Clayton and Grindrod, who made the trip to Madison from Boaz.

“The players went through some tough things laying down the foundation here,” Daugherty said, adding he’s “proud” of the two seniors for committing to play at the next level.
