MADISON – Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association has inducted John Allen, president of Southern Construction & Design, into its Housing Hall of Fame.

Association officials judge induction candidates on active participation within the organization, contributions to the betterment of the home building industry, stability, character and overall length and quality of service to the industry.

An in-depth presentation recounted Allen’s accomplishments in the housing industry. Roy Johnson presented a crystal obelisk to Allen.

“The award is not limited to members of the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association,” executive director Lynn Kilgore said. “It can be presented to outstanding individuals in three categories: the building Industry, governmental area and support to the industry.”

Allen joins 73 other individuals who have received this honor since the Housing Hall of Fame was created in 1988. Allen also participates in Rotary Club of Madison. In 2014, Southern Construction & Design was an award winner at the Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics, sponsored by Better Business Bureau of North Alabama Inc.

Also at the association ceremony, Huntsville/Madison County Builders Foundation awarded $9,750 in scholarships to eight students entering a field related to the building industry.

Recipients were Nathan Anderton, welding technology, Calhoun Community College; Matthew Herrell, surveying and geometrics, Troy University; from J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College, Melvan Hayley, welding and Gina Hopp, HVAC; and from Auburn University, Rachel Guthrie and Brandon Walker, both in civil engineering and Jackson Harmening and Mitchell Smith, both in building science.

Melvyn Hayley from Drake State received the Burl & Betty Chandler Scholarship.

Association members raised scholarship funds with fundraising activities and donations by the family of Burl and Betty Chandler. The foundation’s central objective is to engage in educational, charitable and scientific activities to improve residential housing and provide housing for the public through educational, scientific, charitable and research efforts.
