MADISON – Under a pouring rain, shielded only by a canvas tarp, Madison Mayor Troy Trulock remarked jokingly that it was the first groundbreaking – “mudslinging” combination he had ever attended.
In the coming weeks and months, however, there is about to be a lot more mud where that came from in a portion of western Madison in Limestone County where the Village at Oakland Springs will take shape.
The groundbreaking at the property, held Aug. 6, was the symbolic start towards construction on the pedestrian-friendly development that will feature retail, working and living spaces in one community.
Built in the style of the Village of Providence in northwest Huntsville off of Highway 72, the Village at Oakland Springs comprises over 150 acres and will, according to a press release sent before the event, offer more than 400 homes of different sizes and makeup.
“In my opinion, this becomes the town center for the city of Madison,” Rob Owens, president of VTS Homes, Inc., said. VTS Homes, along with Regent Homes, Jimmy Bryan Homes and The Builders Group, are the four entities currently lined up to build the living spaces at the property.
David McGowan of Regent Homes, based out of Nashville, said his company has signed up to build on 40 lots on the development.
“People will enjoy living, working and playing here,” Owens said. “You can walk to get ice cream, walk to get a haircut.”
The community, located at 28266 Huntsville Brownsferry Road, is being developed by David and Todd Slyman. They developed the Village of Providence under Providence Properties, LLC and will do the same with the Village at Oakland Springs under Placemaker’s Oakland Springs, LLC.
“This is a design-centric community,” Todd said. “It’s build fully around pedestrians. It’s easy to walk to restaurants.”
