HUNTSVILLE – A movie classic that starred Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart vying for Katherine Hepburn’s affection will come alive on stage with Theatre Huntsville’s production of “The Philadelphia Story.”

Opening night will be Sept. 11 for this story that “appeals to anyone who enjoys comedy and romance,” director Kim Parker said. “The play is set in 1939, so people who enjoy classic movies will also enjoy it.”

This production is appropriate for all ages; however, younger children may not understand all the jokes and references.

“I’ve always loved old movies, so plays set in the 1930s and 1940s usually appeal to me. Today, so many movies and shows we watch are striving for realism, and they feel the need to address serious concerns and situations,” Parker said. “Sometimes, I just want a happy ending.”

This Broadway comedy follows Tracy Lord, a headstrong and spoiled daughter of the privileged ‘Philadelphia Lords.’ Divorced from C.K. Dexter Haven, she is engaged to a successful young snob.

However, Tracy grows interested in Mike Connor, a reporter for a society weekly. Following the pre-wedding bash, Tracy and Mike take a moonlight swim and are surprised by Dexter and the fiancé.

Stephanie Hyatt portrays Tracy Lord, with Ethan Mitchell as Dexter and Michael Bradley as Mike Connor. Other actors are Tyler England (Sandy Lord), Gaylen Pugh of Madison (Margaret Lord), Maddie Austin (Dinah Lord), John Hancock (Seth Lord), Chuck Puckett (Uncle Willie Tracy), Carlos Bofill (George Kittredge), Claire Mitchell (Elizabeth Imbrie) and Patrick Gimm (Thomas).

Production staff includes assistant director Phil Parker, producer Gena Rawdon and technical director Scott Trites.

With performances in the Von Braun Center Playhouse, show dates are Sept. 11-12 and 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees are Sept. 13 and 19 at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are adults, $18; students, $16; senior citizens 65 years old and older, $16; and active military, $16. To purchase tickets, visit yourseatiswaiting.org.
