Why I Love This Town

MADISON – Darry Towry likes when Madison comes alive in the fall with football games, homecoming parades and Madison Street Festival.

“Madison is a Southern town that provides everything the people need and a wonderful place to raise children,” she said.

Born and raised in Rogersville, Towry graduated from Lauderdale County High School and attended Calhoun Community College. Her 97-year-old mother, Nela Howell, still lives on a Rogersville farm.

“We moved to Madison in 1975. My husband’s job transferred us from Raleigh, N.C.,” Darry said. In 2005, she retired as an accounting specialist at Chrysler Corporation after almost 25 years.

“Madison is not the town where I or my boys were born, but I sure do love this small town,” Darry said. “Over the years, I’ve watched Madison grow … with beautiful new subdivisions, new businesses and, of course, all the new people.”

She enjoys baby-sitting ‘granddogs’ Alli, Bama, Pepper, Kosta and Biscuit. Darry helps shelters with food and finances for medical help or rescues. On Facebook, she’s trying to find a home for a small dog.

A huge fan of Elvis Presley, Darry loves old-time rock ‘n roll music. She also likes the Eagles, Glen Campbell, Ray Price and her brother-in-law Joe Stampley, a 1970s classic country artist.

Main Street Cafe is a favorite restaurant for its menu and atmosphere. “I sure do miss Thomas Pit BBQ that we had for so many years … the only place to eat when we moved here,” Darry said.

She is married to Ted Towry.

Their family includes Steve Haraway and wife Donna of Madison and sons Dustin Haraway and Dylan Haraway; Stacy Haraway and wife Kris of Madison and children Ryan Haraway, Chelsea Haraway, Taylor Haraway and Kaitlyn Baxley; Shawn Haraway and wife Kim of Taft, Tenn. and daughters Kailee Rigsby and Carly Rigsby; and Chip Towry and wife Caitlyn of East Limestone.

“We’ve watched two of our sons publicly serve as a firefighter, city councilman and county commissioner,” Darry said.

Darry enjoys golf, working in her flowers, reading and walking. “Mostly, I Iike to watch my two grandsons, Dustin and Dylan, play college football at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky.”
