Road network proceeds for Town Madison
MADISON – Road construction is progressing to access the 700-acre Town Madison project.
The board of directors for Town Madison Cooperative District met at Madison City Hall on Oct. 21. Louis Breland is developing the site with assistance from Intergraph Corporation and the City of Madison.
Board member Joey Ceci reported that AT&T has completed moving utility boxes near the water treatment facility to expedite road work. Ceci works as Commerce, Transportation and Legislative Director for the Madison County Commission.
Town Madison will encompass a mixed-use community of housing, retail, restaurants and entertainment venues with 1.5 million square feet of commercial space and creating an estimated 1,600 new jobs. The site’s location is southwest of I-565 and Zierdt Road.
Chairman Tommy Overcash, who also serves as Madison City Council President, asked about developing preliminary site plans for the city’s planning department. Those plans will be available in a few months.
Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and Federal Highway Commission have approved the Interstate Justification Report to allow a new interchange on I-565 for Town Madison.
“Approval of the ramps (for the interchange) is a huge milestone” and will draw attention of retailers, Overcash said. “After the environmental study is complete, retailers will want to see when work on ramps will start and finish” to push for adherence to deadlines.
“They want that (deadline) date to really be hard. That milestone will really start flushing out (retailers),” Overcash said. To-date, no retailers have committed to opening in Town Madison.
After considering bids from four companies, the board approved the contract with SJ&L General Contractor for curbs, gutters and paving of a section of Town Madison Boulevard from the interstate ramps to Zierdt Road.
About five residents of Mountain Brook neighborhood attended the meeting. One resident asked for more advance notice of Town Madison board meetings.
“The major problem is lack of information,” Mountain Brook resident Jonathan Pierce said. “It’s a critical issue.”
The Town Madison board will hold a public meeting on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Mountain Brook clubhouse.
