MADISON – Madison resident Drew Richter has done his homework and hopes to have monster hits with his CD, “Snake Smile.”

“I just completed my first full-length solo CD, which was recorded at Treehouse Music Group in Nashville with multi-Grammy-winning producer Jodi Marr and was mixed by Mike Poole,” Richter said. Poole has collaborated with Robert Plant’s Band of Joy and projects with Alison Krauss and T-Bone Burnett.

Popular in Huntsville’s local music scene, singer/songwriter Richter was voted one of the top three male vocalists for 2013 and 2014 by “The Valley Planet.”

Richter and his family have lived in Madison for 14-plus years. His wife Annabel was elected as “Staff Member of the Year” for Columbia Elementary School this year. Their son Jack is a junior at Bob Jones High School.

His “Snake Smile” CD “is a dark, acoustic-driven introspection on love and other random demons with beautiful harmonies on venomous lyrics,” Richter said.

Richter first made a name for himself as guitarist for the 1980’s Gothic band, A Symptom of Leisure (ASOL). He co-wrote the band’s 1985 self-titled album.

When ASOL dissolved, Richter’s friend persuaded him to move to Miami. In 1990, he lived in Bohemian style into an overcrowded apartment in South Beach’s art deco district and networked with some of Miami’s best musicians.

From Miami, he worked in London and spent four years in Amsterdam writing, playing and blending his influences into his own unique style. Richter said he has his own influences but doesn’t want to sound like them; being inspired by those sounds is more important.

He describes “Snake Smile” as “an introspective journey of observations from travels and experiences in the vein of Somerset Maugham’s literary classic ‘The Razors Edge.'” His songs range from the desperate to the cynical, accompanied by the soft harmonies of singing partner Chelsea Cerha.
