MADISON – ITT Technical Institute and Breckinridge School of Nursing are collaborating to present their first annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair.

The event on Nov. 19 will be held at the ITT office at 9238 Madison Blvd. (just west of Westchester Road) from 4 to 7 p.m. The event is open to the public. All families from Huntsville, Madison and surrounding communities are welcome to attend.

The fair’s goal is to educate children and their families about reactions to emergencies, regular healthcare screenings, growth patterns and developmental milestones.

Visitors can learn the steps to remember in an emergency and what to expect at healthcare visits.

“The Children’s Health and Safety Fair will include many different vendors, healthcare and safety professionals from the area, students and staff of ITT Tech’s Breckinridge School of Nursing and Health Sciences,” career services specialist Miriam Lane said.

Nursing students will share how to achieve healthy lifestyles. Nursing chairperson Veronica Leftridge feels the fair “will be an enjoyable experience for the community.”

“The Children’s Health Fair is a wonderful way to help children learn what to expect when they go to their healthcare provider,” Leftridge said. “The health fair will be an opportunity for parents to have fun with their children as they learn about safety, nutrition, exercise and their bodies.”

Children can bring their dolls or teddy bears for a check-up, too.

The fair will include games, safety instructions, healthy snacks, prizes and giveaways, along with hearing and vision screening.

“My toddler was very fearful of a recent checkup,” nursing student Jessica Upton said about her idea for the fair.

“I realized there should be a way to educate children more about what to expect when they’re getting a checkup,” Upton said. “That motivated me to find a way to educate children in the community about the benefit of regular healthcare screenings.”
