MADISON – Thoughts on Madison’s western perimeter dominated the discussion at Madison City Council’s meeting on Nov. 23.

Council approved Resolution #2015-335-R for a $25,000 contract with TischlerBise to conduct a cost of land-use study, as part of the West Side Master Plan. Amy Sturdivant, Director of Planning and Development, fielded questions about Madison’s western expansion.

Council approved several expenditures:

* $145,214.15, Wiregrass Construction Company, improvements to Mose Chapel Road.

* $38,830.60, Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon Inc., drainage improvements for Garner Street.

* $33,500 to Volkert & Associates and $187,542 to Nola VanPeursem Architects P.C., construction and architectural services for recreation campus project and natatorium.

* $27,620 to Turner Universal and $63,543.47 to Holzheimer Bolek & Meehan, construction and architectural services for Madison Public Library.

In appointments, council named Gerald Sullivan to the Construction Board of Appeals. Dennis Vaughn and Elbert Balch will serve on the Madison Station Historic Preservation Commission. Betty Fletcher and Wesley Alfred were appointed to Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals.

Council approved Sam and Greg’s Pizzeria’s liquor license. The restaurant at 364 Hughes Road received a beer and wine license in 2013.

Horizon Elementary School Robotics Team, “The Grossbusters,” and sponsor Jen Barrow presented their competition program, “How a City Can Better Handle the Trash Problem.”

Council accepted a donation of $500 from Rotary Club of Madison for Madison Senior Center.

Mayor Troy Trulock presented a proclamation supporting the Army Ten-Miler Team, including residents of Madison, Madison County and Huntsville. Organized in 1985, this race is the second largest 10-mile race in the United States. “Congratulations on a great race,” Trulock said.

Trulock also recognized Madison Chamber of Commerce for its recent Small Business Awards ceremony at Insanity Complex that recognized outstanding Madison businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals.

Liberty and Discovery middle school and James Clemens and Bob Jones high schools are participating in Green Power Electric Car Challenge. Students must learn to work with mechanical and aerodynamic friction, electrical resistance, battery discharge efficiency and other aspects.

Old Black Bear Brewery has opened at 212 Main St., Trulock said.

Council President Tim Holcombe announced that the Madison Christmas Parade will be held Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. A work session for December has not been scheduled.
