Jet, Patriot actors nab Alabama slots for SETC

MADISON – Madison’s high schools nabbed both slots for one-act plays to represent Alabama at Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Greensboro, N.C. on March 2-6, 2016.

James Clemens’ “Silenced on Barbour Street” and Bob Jones’ “The Axeman’s Requiem” earned top honors at 2015 Walter Trumbauer State Secondary Theatre Festival at Troy University.

Dwayne Craft, drama instructor with Mary Davis at Bob Jones, has been involved with Trumbauer for 19 years. “I’ve never seen a single city/district do as well, literally sweeping the competition away.”

Craft feels Bob Jones and James Clemens, led by Amy Patel and Clint Merritt, can win at SETC. “The best school systems have the best arts programs,” Craft said.

At state, “The Axeman’s Requiem” won “Best in Show, “Best Set,” “Best Actress” for Emily McDowell and All-Star Cast Kamron Sanderfer and Daniel Darnell.

“Silenced on Barbour Street” won “Best Technical Production,” “Best in Show” and All-Star Cast Tad Hutt, Jessica Russ and Becky Protos.

James Clemens winners:

* Kyle McCormick, second, solo pantomime male varsity.

* Melanie Garcia and Becky Protos, first, duet pantomime novice.

* Carrie Gormley and Heyden Pearson, novice, first and Becky Protos and Kayla Braxton, varsity, first, duet reader’s theatre comedic varsity.

* Johnathan Keller, third, solo acting male contemporary dramatic varsity.

* Tad Hutt and Johnathan Keller, second, duet acting contemporary comedic varsity.

* Kayla Braxton, third and Brittany Quach, second, solo musical female comedic varsity.

* Rush Waggoner, second, solo musical male dramatic novice.

Bob Jones winners:

* Kafui Sakyi-Addo and Shelby Kilpatrick, first, Noelle Hendrickson and Alice Choup, second, Sarah Waldrop and Anna Hershman, third, duet reader’s theatre dramatic novice.

* Zach Moss, first, novice and Devontae Mason, first, varsity, solo acting male contemporary dramatic.

* Jarrod Parker, second, solo acting male contemporary comedic novice.

* Xander Voigt and Jasmin Watson, third, duet acting contemporary dramatic novice.

* Allie Dutton and Soumyaa Utlapalli, third, duet acting classical dramatic varsity.

* Nirah Burwell and Dominick Lewis, first, novice and Jackson Fitzgibbon and Anna McAbee, first, varsity, duet acting contemporary comedic novice.

* Maggie Moore, solo acting classical dramatic varsity, second.

* Yanzhi Lai, costume design novice, second.
