MADISON – For Christmas Card Lane, Connie Blackwell painted a display that reminds the viewer of the real purpose of the Christmas holiday.

“I painted a card last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was asked to paint again this year and was honored to be asked,” Blackwell said.

Her painting, “Reason for the Season,” depicts Mary, Joseph and “our Lord, Jesus. I really wanted to remind everyone to rejoice for the birth of our Lord.”

Her interest in art began at an early age. She started painting in oils about 30 years ago. “I took a few lessons and then just started enjoying painting on my own,” Blackwell said.

Her husband Norman and adult children, Buck and Toni, always have encouraged her hobby of painting, especially now that she is retired.

“I would like to thank Madison Arts Council for all their hard work to bring joy to the season,” Blackwell said.

“Christmas Card Lane is an outdoor, life-size card exhibit located in the heart of Madison,” event founder Shrail Heinrich said. “You’ll find whimsical, traditional and religious themes amongst the more than 30 designs on display.”

Located in Madison historic district, the ‘lane’ is situated along Church and Front streets in front lawns of the homes. “Be sure to enjoy this visual holiday delight,” Heinrich said.

After viewing the entries on Christmas Card Lane, individuals are encouraged to vote for their favorite painting. To vote, visit artsmadison.org/christmas-card-lane-vote.

Christmas Card Lane is illuminated through Dec. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m., Heinrich said. For more information about Madison Arts Council, visit artsmadison.org.
