MADISON – Joe Mai’s technical background is setting high standards in hygiene at Beyond Nail Spa, 97 Hughes Road, Suite C in Madison Market Center.

Holding a master’s degree in polymer chemistry, Mai previously worked with Food and Drug Administration procedures and specifications. “I know how important safety and hygiene are for a nail salon. My educational and employment history is a tremendous asset to my new business,” he said.

“Madison is a wonderful community for new business owners like myself. My business and brand will be a great addition to Madison, because other nail salons in town are not focused solely on hygiene and sanitation,” Mai said.

Mai’s family-owned business is not part of a franchise. “I’ve always wanted to own a small business and was delighted when this opportunity became available,” he said.

Women and men can expect a full array of services. The spa offers acrylic gel and powder; glitter and gel powder; pink & white; basic and deluxe manicures and pedicures, organic and pearl spas; shellac/gel; and waxing.

“We serve clients who have diabetes and offer 10-percent military discount to soldiers and their spouses,” Mai said.

“We use fresh, disposable packs and liners for pedicures. We use an in-house, hospital-grade autoclave to sterilize our individual metal implements (like) dental offices and hospitals prepare their instruments,” he said.

“Hygiene is our number one priority. We follow all Alabama health department guidelines,” Mai said. Recently, the spa earned a 100-percent rating from the health department.

With 20-plus years experience, shop manager Kim owned three nails salons in California. “She has trained many nail technicians. Kim has a great work ethic. Her clients love her friendly, professional manner and focus on detail,” Mai said.

Shop hours are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mai’s daughter Kimberly attends Liberty Middle school. Daughter Katherine attends Mill Creek Elementary School. His son Victor is two years old.
