Why I Love This Town

MADISON – Everyone in Madison reaches out to help others, Beth Mumaw said.

“You can always count on a neighbor or friend to bring you a meal or assist when needed. I cannot count the number of times friends have helped me,” she said.
“Going to a store is a social event and pretty much a guarantee you’ll run into someone you know. So, dress accordingly.”

She first moved to Huntsville in 1986, moved back to Ohio and returned permanently to Madison. Her hometown is Chardon, Ohio, population 6,000. “Madison is significantly larger. Both places offer sense of community, but Madison” has more attractions, Mumaw said.

Chardon received 30 inches of snow last week. “Although it’s pretty when it first comes down, I don’t miss being in it for weeks,” Mumaw said. “Madison still has the change of seasons, but warm weather lasts so much longer. I so love warm weather.”

Mumaw praised Madison schools, including extracurriculars like “Bob Jones and James Clemens’ drama teams that are like no other.”

For 14 years, Mumaw has worked for Sentry Construction. At her first full-time job at Sajar Plastics in Middlefield, Ohio, she assisted Jay Berwanger, first Heisman Trophy winner. She also has worked in insurance, retail and secretarial jobs.

Her son Kyle and his wife Keegan are expecting their first child, a girl, in June. Keegan works for Smythe Cramer Real Estate. Kyle works as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.

“My heart belongs to Madison Street Festival,” Mumaw said. She serves as hospitality chairperson and a director. “My first street festival was in 1996 with Boy Scout Troop 350.”

She is president of Taking Care of Paws – Sasha’s Way, a tribute to Sasha Dison. Mumaw has served on Madison Arts Council and Historic Lowry House Advisory Board.

“I love Cricket’s for wings and grilled chicken salad and Main Street Cafe especially for quiche or trio salad,” she said. She enjoys attending Christmas Card Lane and Art 4 Paws.

A charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mumaw served on their 25th anniversary committee. She enjoys swimming and baking cookies and cakes.
