BIRMINGHAM – They wanted blue, but red will do for now.

James Clemens’ girls followed a familiar theme at the Class 7A state high school indoor track and field championships Feb. 5-6 at the Crossplex in Birmingham and earned the red-tinted trophy that goes to the runner-up.

The Jets finished second behind Hoover for the fifth time in as many meets this season. For the outdoor season, James Clemens coach Drew Bell covets the blue championship hardware.

“I challenge this team and coaches to work hard this spring to bring home the blue,’’ Bell said.

He is assisted by Elan Gaddy, Kaetlyn Hermann, Joshua Johnson and Dave Seeley.

Hoover totaled 126 points to James Clemens’ 83. Bob Jones placed 13th and Sparkman 16th.

Jets senior Kayla Williams won the 60-meter dash in a record 7.73 seconds, breaking the old mark of 7.78 she set last year. She also won the long jump and was second in the triple jump.

Also, Jennifer Reis was second in the high jump, Zuri Falkner and Kennedy Reese finished 2-3 in the shot put and Dekonte Gistarb was fourth in the 60 hurdles and triple jump. Shataeya Ligon scored points in the long jump.

In the boys meet, Bob Jones was 11th, James Clemens 14th and Sparkman 16th. Madison Academy was four in the Class 1A-3A division.

Scoring for the Jets were Aaron Anderson (400), Aaron Beane (1,600), James Edmonds (high jump) and Noah Graham (pole vault).
